Yeah yeah. I know I SHOULD be doing something with my money.

But where do I start? What do I click on? How much time does it really take?

What do I actually DO?

I’m a former biglaw lawyer, and I used to be dependent on my attorney salary, burnt out, and desperate for a way out. Luckily, I had a teacher: my investor dad, Phil Town. Over all my numbers-phobic objections, he taught me the mechanics of how to invest my money like Warren Buffett.

Money stuff sucks.

While he taught me WHAT to do, he couldn’t teach me HOW to make investing fit into my life, with accountability, on a real-life basis. I needed to learn that on my own.

What does a real Investing Practice look like, and how do I get myself to do it?

How did I shift investing from something that was optional, to something that is necessary, regular, and such a blissful part of my week that I miss it when I don’t do it? (Because yeah, I don’t do it all the time, life gets in the way – and that’s part of the Practice too.) We all have a “should” list of things we SHOULD be doing: I should exercise more, I should floss, I should clean out those drawers in the kitchen, I should practice my investing.

The Financial Industrial Complex is not going to do this for us, you guys.

Through trial and error and pulling nuggets of wisdom from lots of sources, I learned how to make an Investing Practice work for me – joyfully. The best investors in the world treat investing as a practice, as a journey of gradual transformation, in which wealth is a lovely byproduct of mastery. Amazingly, that’s what it feels like for me now.

I’ve also discovered how much power my money has. With my money, I try to buy from companies that match my values – which are probably different from yours, and that’s the point.

My money is my vote. Your money is YOUR vote. Let’s take out power back by taking our money back, and putting it to work for wonderful companies.

Now, I feel like a warrior from my couch.

Now, I do have the opportunity now to change my life through an Investing Practice. To find the power in my money. And most of all – frankly, even better than growing financial wealth – I feel more abundant in my life. More confident, more in control, more connected to my world. The wealth is just a nice byproduct. (I gave a whole TEDx talk about this process – you can watch it here.)

How do I practice my investing now? By passing on the favor, and showing you, in my regular Investing Practice newsletter.

Meet Danielle

Danielle Town is a New York Times bestselling author and Investing Practice expert who started out numbers-phobic and terrified of fluctuating stock markets, until she discovered that, with a little knowledge and practice, her weaknesses were actually strengths that made her a natural Buffett-style investor.

She is now focused on developing her own value Investing Practice to create generational wealth, and helping others do the same, through recognizing the power of our money. She wrote her book, Invested: How Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger Taught Me to Master My Mind, My Emotions, and My Money (with a Little Help from My Dad), with her investor father, Phil Town. They banter about value investing and life on their podcast, InvestED.

AS SEEN ON:

Not Your Typical Investing Newsletter

We’ve all heard of the stultifyingly dry investing analysis out there. It’s partly what kept me from getting interested in investing for so many years. This newsletter is opposite. It’s the story of my investing as it really is: cool investing ideas I get from my everyday life, how I find the motivation to sit down and do it, the mistakes (especially the mistakes – they’re the best teachers!), the anxiety and fear I still feel regularly, the Too Hard companies that make me want to quit, the Missions that make me sit up and take notice, the note-taking I do, and the companies with which I fall deeply in love. There are no valuation numbers, no recommendations, no advice. It’s an Investing Practice in real life.
